Goldfish is swimming sideways and has a bump on his side.

I have a Fantail Goldfish in a 2.5 gal. aquarium, with fake plants, and a cave. The Tank has a filter system and once a week the water is changed. A week ago I noticed he had a bump on his right side that was red and also leaked puss. Up until 2 days ago, he was swimming and eating fine. He still eats, he gets 1 or 2 pellets twice a day. but lately he's been swimming sideways or even upside down.

The last water change was a day ago. He's not as active now, he lays at the bottom of the tank behind the plants, but doesn't seem to be gasping for air, but rather just tired.

I'm not sure what to do or even what it is.

Have you checked PH,ammonia and nitrates? You don't change all the water do you?

I am saddend to say that your fish will soon die. the large belly goldfish are most prone to this condition, usually the swim bladder is askew in it's normal position and a gas has taken over where air is normally. the problem is diet, goldies must have 30-40% vegeterian food and protein no greater than 38-40% GOLDIES CAN NOT HANDLE HI PROTEIN, it will eventully kill them. high nutrients in their tank will exasperate the condition. goldfish MUST have weekly partial water exchanges. use frozen foods also with flake/ pellets.
