Water for new aquarium

I have a friend who has asked me to help him set up a new aquarium for fresh-water tropicals or possibly cychlids. I am an amateur myself but have successfully maintained a tank with an african cychlid for about 6 years now and previously raised tropicals over the years.

My question:

My friend has a filtration (water softening?) system which requires a regular replenishing of salt. There is still a prevalence of iron which stains the porcelain of his sink, tub and toilet bowl and the distinct aroma of sulphur that arises when the tap is turned on.

What problems does this present for an aquarium, and how can we combat them? I am concerned that it may require major water adjustments. Is the presence of the filtering salt in the water safe for tropicals?

Thank you.
