Do you mean the erect white part or both that and the green peeled-back part? The white is the spadix, with the male or pollen-bearing 'flowers' on the top portion and the females on the bottom (where else do women belong?) Actually, in plants it makes sense, as the pollen falls down on the the females below. In some cases the females don't mature until after the pollen has dried and blown away (or been removed by the hybridizer or other pollinator) so that pollination by another individual is ensured. The green curled-back portion is the spathe, and that combination is what defines an aroid--spathe and spadix inflorescence. But I don't know what your plant is specifically.

Thank you that answered my question very well. I have quite a few aroid species around me here in Colombia but no clue as to how to identify them.

    Hi,
you can send pictures of your No ID's to this website:
    http://www.wschowa.com/abrimaal/araceum/unid/id.htm
They should be able to ID it for you.
What part of Colombia? I'm from Cali, but live in NY now.
