Both Alocasia and Colocasia are commonly called "Elephant Ears" as are several Philodendron, Anthurium, Caladium, Xanthosoma and other aroids. Of these, Alocasia, Colocasia, Xanthosoma and Caladium grow from tubers which are simply an underground stem.

In some regions, including the Dallas area, either Alocasia odora and Colocasia esculenta as well as some others will spread fairly quickly but I don't know any that spread super fast. All will go dormant in the winter and if the winter is super cold may not survive although we have almost all survive outdoors in NW Arkansas.
