Cutting down a Philodendron (in size)

I've had a philodendron for years, and it's getting big--too big for my yard, in fact. Is there any possibility it would survive a trunk amputation if I left it some areal roots and replanted it? Or would it grow again from the roots if I sliced off the top? I'd like to keep it, if at all possible.

Chop it off, it will grow from the trunk left but will be a slow process. You can also retain the leafy upper portion, they root easily.

I live in a warmer part of world so my advice would have a lesser weightage then someone who is growing it in your zone.

It's very warm here (S CA). I wonder if Gardenweb's Zone finder got my zone wrong?

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I do want to keep the philodendron, but not at his current height--or more.

actually you can pot your plant in the ground in zone 9 and be done with it, it will survive..cut the top off with a set of roots and put it in the ground
