My experience so far with this plant is that you are best off treating it almost as a succulent rather than a jungle plant. What that means is that you should never let it be really wet, and you should let it dry out between waterings. The humidity can be high, but the soil cannot be allowed to become really water-saturated because if it does, the plant is likely to rot off quickly. I have this plant as well as the Alocasia rugosum (similar in care) and they are doing fine under this regime. I lost a Black Velvet last year when the rains came and it got really wetted down. It died in about a week's time and there was no saving it (I tried valiantly).

So, in conclusion, you can grow it indoors so long as you give it partial sun and don't ever let it get too wet.
