I'm gradually converting our back patio area to a more "tropical" look, and am thinking one of the two would contribute nicely. I'd have to get them online, so I was looking for some advice or other comparisons re: ease of culture, quirks, size, etc. South Georgia has at least a few subfreezing days each winter, but I've had some luck with tropical perennials (Hedychium gardnerianum, Curcuma aeruginosa, black and illustris Colocasias) in the ground coming back. Alocasia Portei is very cold sensitive (at least for me). Alocasia Sinuata is a little more cold hardy. For the most part, sustained temps of 45 degrees or less for 2 days or more will make the plants go dormant. They should survive and come back if the root bulbs are protected or brought indoors for the winter. For me, if my Alocasias go dormant, they do not grow full size again that growing season. Full size, both of these can reach 6-8 feet.

Thanks for the information. Sounds like sinuata might be the better choice between these two at present. The kids preferred A. lauterbachiana over either of these (okay, so I dragged 'em over to take a look!), so I ordered one of these online, but the sinuata may be in our near future.
