Colocasia Esculenta 'black Magic'

I saw one of these at the store and I would really like to find out how to grow them. The tag did not give very much information. All it said was shade. I have not been able to find very much information. Most of my yard is full sun. Not much shade, maybe a few hours a day. Is it possible to get them to grow? Or do they really need complete shade. Thanks for your help

Jody

Jodi,

I've grown Black Magic in a large pot for two years. Mine gets about 6 hrs full sun a day.

It's a real water hog under these conditions - I've put it on a drip system so I don't have to water twice a day. This year it was set back a little because it wilted badly early in July while I was out of town and the drip system failed. But it's still beautiful..

Good luck!

Gerry

They do much better in sun, not shade. And yes, they love water, they can be grown as aquatic plants or set into a pot without drainage holes and the soil kept like mud. Many cannas can be grown this way too.

When I first got mine it said to grow it in shade too. Not a good idea! In the shade it will lose all that lovely 'blackness'. Full sun, lots of water, lots of heat, lots of fertilizer. The more it gets the bigger it grows.
