Does it have a trunk below the crown? It has been my experience that I can cut most alocasias below the crown in the trunk area, the trunk will sprout new plants from the trunk and roots, and the cut-off end can be easily rooted. Dust both cut/raw ends with powdered sulfur to prevent bleeding and rot.

My plant has no trunk as yet, but looks like it is trying to develop one. I think the best bet is to keep it as is for now (taking up much of our sun room!), then cut it back in spring and follow your instructions. Thanks for sharing your experience.
