Saving EE Bulbs in Root Mass ??

I have a tub (about 3' diameter) containng 3 EE bulbs - the foliage is 6' high and about 8-9' across - absolutely awesome!!! I would like to try to dig out the bulbs and try to save them for use again next year (I bought on-line because I couldn't find any locally and ended up paying $60 for them). However, the previous year, when the foliage died off, and when I was able to dump the container, the bulbs were so intertangled with roots, the whole thing was one solid mass and I was unable to to retrieve the bulbs. Is it possible (physically) or practical to try to save these bulbs or should I just give up and plan to buy new ones next year? I can enlist the assistance of my 15-year old grandson for the heavy work, but last year, the dirt/root/bulb mass (after I clipped off the dead foliage) weighed well over 100 lbs and too difficult to handle. Any advicee on how to go about the seemingly arduous task is appreciated.
