callousing large alocasia growth tip

I just obtained two large growth tips with about 4-6 inches of tuber below the tip from mature sarian plants at work. The plants were about 8 foot tall and in order to save space in the greenhouses at work they cut the top of the tubers off and were going to hit the compost. So considering that there was tuber intact below it i took them to overwinter. I was wondering if any one has experiences with how long they would need to callous over. They were just cut 2 days ago and the tuber is 5 inches in diameter. The leaves were all cut back to the tuber except for the center two in which were cut back to where the newest leaf would pop from.

I figured i would let them callous and pot them up into snug containers for the winter considering they will overwinter in the house close to a window sill.

Any thoughts appreaciated thanks.

I don't know how long it will take to callous but to speed the process, dust the cut end with sulfur dust. The would will 'cauterize' in just a couple of days.

Thanks for the info. It appeared to begin to rot on the end, so with a 10% bleach solution i wiped down where the mold was forming as well as the entire wound area. Figured this would disinfect it. Then wiped it dry and coated with a fungicide as a paste over the whole wound. It appeared so far to harden up since then and the rot stopped. Ill keep an eye on on.

Many aroiders use cinnamon as a fungicide since it is a natural anti fungal. It works great. You can find several discussions about this on the International Aroid Society forum Aroid l.

Just do a search at the left of the page
