What is the best voodoo lily (amorphophallus, Dracunculus, Sauromatum, etc.) to start out with? I mean, which is the easiest to grow and, most importantly, least expensive?
Flash, I can't say which is easier or better, as I only purchased all of them this year, but all can be purchased fairly cheap. I recently purchased a 3-4" A. konjac tuber on eBay for $10 and a couple of 2" S.(Typhonium?) venosum tubers for $12 total, also on eBay, and I bought a pair of 3" D. vulgaris bulbs at my local garden center this summer for $9 the pair. My total cost is $31 and with postage, totals about $40 and I'm told all of these are blooming size, although the konjac might be marginal.
I took an interest because of the foliage more than the flowers, and the purported deer resistance of them.
I started out with the Dracunculus vulgaris and have been growing it for 6 or 7 years now. I like the foliage and the fact that it is hardy in my zone 6. It multiplies like crazy also. I was able to use the offsets they produce to trade for other Arums and Amorphophallus this year. Jim
