Based on the stem and vein structure the plant appears to be a hybriized form of Philodendron erubescences. Common names include Red leaf Philodendron, Blushing Philodendron, Red Emerald Philodendron,
Burgundy Philodendron and other hybrid names

"erubescens" indicates red. The link below will tell you more. The species commonly has reddish blade undersides as well as reddish petioles along with a beautiful red inflorescence.

I like the ID, so many things are right about it, but am troubled by the absence of obvious cataphylls... might hybridizing reduce them significantly?

The cataphylls will only be visible on this plant for a few weeks right after each leaf blade is formed. The next time a blade appears to be coming out watch for it to unfurl first and wrap around the new blade. It should then begin to recurve (turn back) as the blade fully opens and will eventually drop off.
