Yellowing bamboo

I have one Bamboo plant of 4 that were braided. One of the 4 became infected and the plants were separated. Mine was planted in a glass bowl with glass beads, and water to just cover the roots. It has been planted that way for about 2 years. Recently the leaves yellow and die one by one, from the top down. Therefore no new growth is coming out of the top. The stem is fine, not yellow or mushy. I am concerned that it will continue to wilt and eventually die. I use tap water left out for 3 days or more, for watering. It gets indirect sunlight, and has a good rust-colored root network. Does it need to be planted in dirt? I have sentimental connection to this plant, so I want to do what I can to keep it alive. Thanks.
