Problems with Squash plant

Hi, I'm currently growing some variety of squash, looks like a variety of butternut, that came from seeds of previously bought squash at the market. I have tons of plant, and quite a few fruit. However, when the female flower dies, so does the fruit. I thought at first it was a problem in pollination, so I got out there and did it my self with some cotton buds...however, still the same result. I have looked around at other forums, some similar problems I have seen but no one seems to have answered the question...what to do? I have read things about insects, about heat, about cutting back the vine...any suggestions or experience that might lead to one of these answers? Thanks so much for the help! - Becks
