Flavorful ginger varieties?

My cousin pointed out to me that the ginger used in India is much stronger than the ginger available in the grocery stores here. So here is my question:

- Is that because it is not as fresh, i.e. does it make sense to grow my own grocery store ginger at home?

-Is that because they grow a different variety of ginger in India? If that is the case can I buy "seed ginger" here in the states and grow it at home?

Hopefully someone has been able to help you in or near your area. Here's what (little) I know. First, there are quite a few varieties of "ginger" to include those that fall into the turmeric variety. So, your cousin from India speaks the truth. Different varieties have different looks and tastes. Second, yes. There is at least one place that sell many different varieties. Here in Hawaii. It is called Puna Organics, Hawaiian organic ginger. They also sells to the mainland. Now is a good time to order because the plants have broken dormancy. I just confirmed my own and am awaiting with baited breath a few more unusual varieties.
