is taro leaves the same as mulunggay leaves

I went to a philippino market looking for malunggay leaves or moringa leaves and the clerk directed me to the produce section and gave me a bag that says dried taro leaves. She insisted that it was the same thing. can anyone tell me if these taro leaves (dahon ng gabi) is the same as malunggay leaves?

| Michaelle: Taro leaf comes from the taro plant (Colocasia esculenta and forms). It goes by many names; in the Phillipines, as you've stated, it is called "gabi". Malunggay leaf comes from the moringa tree (Moringa oleifera). Different plants, different tastes, different ways to grow them. But it could be that they have some use (medicinal?) that makes them substitutable. Maybe? Joe |

I want to use the malunggay leaves for the purpose of bringing on a more richer breasmilk production. I've been told that eating the leaves would help me. The only thing is I can't find the leaves anywhere. Michaelle |

| just eat healthy diet lots of leafy green vegetables, spinach, bok choy. have protein chicken, beef, pork. for more milk production drink liquids everytime you breast feed.the more the baby sucks the more your body will produce but remember to drink water, have couple of glasses of water every time you feed the baby. and get lots of rest. when the baby naps take a nap too. |

| thank you so much for the words of wisdom. i will certainetly try to drink even more water. with 4 kids all under the age of 9 it is not always possible to take naps but I will keep trying to. i will also try to find another asian market around here. |

| If I understand the malungay is to promote milk production, you might want to look into fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) which has been used for the same purpose. |

you are right. fenugreek does the same thing. I am taking fenugreek tables several times a day already. Michaelle |

Another suggestion: cellery , parsley. They are good for nursing mothers but not recommended when they are prgnant. with celery you can juice it and drink. It can also help you fall sleep better. |

| I would stay away from eating pork. It can contain worms in it that will live in your brain tissue... When they die, they will irritate your brain and you will have to have surgery to have the worms removed. This is called trichinosis. Trichinosis is most commonly found in "unclean" animals, like dogs, cats, rabbits, game cats (cougar, lion/etc), bear, coyote, wolf, etc.. Basically stay away from any kind of scavaging animal & fish.. Eating beef, chicken, salmon and things like tofu would be good.. Definitely up the vegetable and fruit intake. Fenugreek is good.. You can also massage your breasts, there's certain ways to do it (you can look it up online) and it'll help stimulate milk production.. Also, you can pump them.. The more they're emptied, the more milk they'll be told to make. Blessed Thistle is an herb that also stimulates more milk production. They also have teas you can drink made from blessed thistle.. Alfalfa will also help. There's some stuff called Green Vibrance, you can get at health food store.. You have to keep it frozen. It tastes terrible (very grassy), but it contains a ton of good vitamins, minerals and etc that would be beneficial for you AND your baby.. You can eat alfalfa in sprout form or pills. I like how they taste as sprouts.. lol :) Here's a good sandwich to make with them: Slice some cucumber, avocado and use some alfalfa sprouts, toast some bread- whatever kind you like, I use a 12 grain whole wheat bread, toast it, and put a bit of mustard on the bread- I like the spicy brown mustard.. Then just put the cucumber, avocado and sprouts on the bread and eat. You can add some tomato on there if you like as well. :) It's a great tasting sandwich!!! You can also use alfalfa in salads.
