Searching for SWEET radish

| Hello all,
DH and I had dinner in a local Asian restaurant and the plates were decorated with beautiful carved flowers. I decided to taste them and they were fantastic. I asked the server what it was and she said 'radish'. I tried to find out the name of the radish but she did not know.
Does anyone know the names of radish that are sweet?? The only radish I am familiar with are very hot, bitter or 'sharp' flavor. This radish was actually sweet - not as sweet as sugar but sweet like a carrot.
Anyone know the name of a radish - all white - that is sweet in taste?? I want to get seed and grow it out this year.
Thanks,
DL |

Most chinese radishes are not muster-like hot, except sometime for the skin. I buy the seeds from local Asian market. Now is the time to spring planting in zone 7, 7+, 8. They do better in the fall/winter though. |

| cyrus_gardner, Thanks!! I will get some seed and try a few plants in spring and that way I can taste to determine 'sweetness' and pick a variety for fall planting. DL |

| Sounds like it might have been some type of Daikon DL. |

| Many of the oriental radishes have a mild flavor and are used in cooked dishes. Watermelon, Minowase,Everest, Green Heart, Summer Cross, Green Luobo, Tae Baek are among the easiest to find. |

| Hello all, I found the sweet radish at a Korean Grocery. It looks almost exactly like a Daikon -but- the top 1/3 is pale green. Not sweet like sugar but sweet like a carrot. I don't know the name of this radish but next time I go I will ask and then look for seeds. Thanks to all who gave suggestions. Cheers, DL |

The reason the top side is green, is because they have a habit of poking out of soil and lights make that part green. To me those chines/koreans are tastier and crunchier than daikon. Daikons have a bland flavor, to me. |

| Not really cyrus. The white variesties also grow half out of the ground and stay white, The green top ones are genetic. Miyashige Green Neck, Green Meat, Luobo, Oharu are long type like the Japanese daikons. Some of the round types like Watermelon also have green shoulders. The half long Korean cultivars like Tae Baek, Il Shim, Rok Cheon, also have green shoulders. Of course there are also red Oriental radishes. |
