Mibuna

I have some Mibuna seed. The pk says it spreads. How far apart do I plant the seedlings in the garden?
How long into the season should i expect it to be usefull for harvest. It says it can take heat as well as cold weather. But does that mean it can take 100 degree weather, if it is watered well?

RE: Mibuna

Veggiecanner, I only grew mibuna once but I found it nearly indistinguishable from mizuna except that mizuna plants have cut leaves while mibuna has long narrow leaves. They are both Brassica rapa ssp. nipposinica according to the University of Melbourne. I notice that the Chinese do not separate them by name and the Japanese do not always, either.

Size depends on when and how you harvest them. I like to use the small plants and leave just a few to reach full size. They require quite a lot of thinning that way as at maturity the plant easily takes up a square foot of the garden. I’m sure harvesting just the outside leaves should work fine.

I like mizuna/mibuna real well because it is so slow to bolt. The leaves are fairly tender but the flavor is not unlike other Asian mustards. Like most greens, they'll prefer some afternoon shade when the days start really getting hot. They do have fairly short roots so require a moist soil but baby them and you'll have a long harvest season.

Oh, and keep those slugs away from them. The flea beetles also like ‘em, too.

Steve
