Round stems... hmm. The most typical Chinese garlic chives are the ones that have flattened stems that are called "jiu cai" in Chinese or "nira" in Japanese. But I seem to recall eating slightly bigger ones with round stems. I do think they are the same, or almost the same. You can plant some and give it a try -- the alternative is to go to a Chinese supermarket and take a look at some in person. Good luck!

Yes, the Japanese variety (niira) are flat leaved. Grandma taught my j-mother-in-law to spread some ashes from the hearth-fire on the semi-wild niira patches every now and then.

What you saw in restaurant were the round chinese chive flower stems(with unopened tear-shaped flower buds on top).

However, leaves of Chinese garlic chives are flat.

Leaves and stems are sold separetely in chinese markets.

You can order chinese chive/garlic chive seeds online, such as johnny's.

These can be a bit invasive in the garden so try to eat the flower buds when you can.
