Mahleb cherry

Is anyone growing, or has ever cooked with the Mahaleb Cherry (Prunus mahaleb L.)? I have good success with growing cherry seeds, but the product sold in stores does not have an outer shell, helpful for protecting the seed during their long germination time.

Wow, violet - Thanks! The sites give a history of the cherry & helps explain what it is. I had no idea it was used in Greek & other cuisines. I am still going through it, but your post is all-encompassing.
It would be nice if the stores sold the whole cherry instead of just the pit.
