Is it to late to try Luffa seeds? I just got some seeds and it says 108 days to maturity. Anyone else in Zone 5 trying them?

If you direct sow into the ground, go for it. Days are simply a guide. Many other things can affect the "average number of days to maturity". You might have a mild fall extending the season.

Luffa needs over 100 days if you want to make sponges. Growing for food needs only 80 days. Don't let the gourds grow too big like I do every year, they get fibrous real quick.

I'm in the Boston area and only successful in ripening 2 gourds in 3 years for seeds, both were from last year. The plants grew from end of May to frost in October... that's 130 days, for crying out loud :-)

From my experience, luffa yields profusely if netting is used. Some birds love the blossoms, and ants love them too. Who can resist the delicate sweet scent of the leaves?
