What is the name of the vegetable and how do I grow it...

| Hi
I recently posted about bitter melon and asked if anyone knew the name of a similar shaped melon but which tasted sweet and not at all bitter. I only know the name in hokkien. It was suggested that I try it out on the forum anyway -
My mum calls it "guck" (rhymes with yuck) melon. She says it literally is meant to translated to "cornered" - representing the uniform ridges of the melon
If anyone knows what this could be - please let me know.
Thanks |

Hi, Agnes It could be Angled Luffa - Luffa acutangula. It has ridges and is not bitter at all I would suggest the book :"Asian Herbs & Vegetables - How to identify, grow and use them in Australia" by Penny Woodward (Hyland House, 2000). It has very good photos and growing instructions. Rose-Marie |

| Luffa acutangula is called "Kak kuey" in Hokkien, but it is a good possibility... Agnes, is this it?
Bitter Melon is definitely a distinct look but shapes can vary depending on variety. Some are long, some are short, some are more round, some are elongated, some have more of a point at the end, some don't.... Agnes, we need to know if it is only the shape (outline) of the melon in question which resembles the bitter melon and not the bumpy texture. Is the melon you're looking for green? white? have stripes? etc? How does your mom like to use this in cooking? |

| Aggie, Which one was it? The "Suyo Long" Cucumber or the Luffa acutangula? |

| Aggie, Solanum deduced that one for you... ;) Start them early because they take a long time to get going and just give them lots of sun, water, and a strong support they can climb. Harvest when young so they're more tender. |

Agnes, Wait until next spring to grow them and, here again, give them a *lot* of water once they are established. Maybe, if you have enough seeds, try a planting in full sun and another one where the plants are in semi-shade in the middle of the day. The best way is to find people in your region who are growing these plants and try to duplicate the conditions. Rose-Marie |
