Vietnamese GAC

| Anyone growing GAC (Momordica cochinchinensis)? It is a bitter melon relative which gets a bright red center around the seeds and is used for coloring rice for special occasions. How do I do that? Any other uses? I have a small seedling going now. Thanks. Paul. |

| Paul, I'm growing some bitter melons, too. I've never heard about using the red for coloring rice but then I'm not Vietnamese. We pick the melon when green and then blanch (makes it less bitter). Then stir-fry it with beef, or chicken with black bean sauce. You could stuff it, too, with ground pork and then steamed. You'll probably find recipes on the net. PK |

Paul,
That is the only use for GAC. They color the sweet rice, using on wedding occasion. If I remember it right, it's a vine. The stem is thin but produce fruit as big as a cantulop so be sure to support the weights. the fruit has green, rough skin out side (look like a small jackfruit but round.) When they turn red and soft they're ready to be picked. Use the red meat inside mix well with sweet rice, add little sugar and coconut milk then steam. You can steam with black seed in there for decoration too. TT |

| An ebay merchant member sells the seeds of Momordica cochin. under the name treefromseed.I received the seeds from him just to day in time as he promised.Seeds are in good shape and price is very reasonable. |
