Happyday, this must not be what you are thinking of but it has some great photographs of a horizontal trellis.

The gardener just used tree branches.

Digit, that is an amazing trellis! Thanks for the link! Amazing that the vines can hold so many melons so far off the ground! There must be so much weight on those branches. I wish I could have watched as they built it.

I found the one I was thinking of, in the Vegetable Forum. Guavalane had posted the pix, the trellis by a neighbor from China named Cheng. But Guavalane has no email so could not ask directly for more info on how to build that one. Chengs was closer to the ground with blocks under the melons and gourds, on top of carpet for weed control.

I'll build something like these this year. Last year the melons were so thick I couldn't walk into them without stepping on a vine so I missed picking some ripe cantaloupes on time. This year I'll have them off the ground and off the paths on a trellis
