Hi all,
I am a novice gardener I have grown bitter melon and ant hybrid gourd seedlings. How much space and protection do these plants need. Trellis? wire to grow on protection?
Can I grow both types in the same large container to protecteach from disease???
With Thanks

| What zone are you in ? Bittermelon vines can get large/long/tall if it gets hot, It will not grow that well below 75F but grows crazy above 85F. I grow them on a 6 - 7' high fence/trellis. Most people say that Bitter Melon is not bothered by many pests or diseases. I am not familiar with Ant hybrid gourd. |

| "Ant" is a hybrid bitter melon, with small, very bitter fruit. "Thailand" (which I obtained from Evergreen Y. H. several years ago) is an open-pollinated equivalent. Ditto on Nemfon's trellis recommendations. The vines are rampant, and will densely cover even a tall trellis. I space my plants 24 inches apart in the row. If you search this forum, there are several good threads on growing bitter melon. |

Thank you both for information. I am very excited that my plants have grown to seedling size. My climate is a little cooler than both your zones. We have therefore made an outside growing area that is trellised about four feet tall and protected. to keep the temperature up to the 85 degrees (or 29 celseus in this country)Can you tell me how much water the plants like. So far I have kept the sprouting seeds very wet in the green house, now planted out am not sure if I am over watering? Again with thanks ozykate |

| Ozykate - How are your Bittermelon growing ? You are actually 1 ( or 1 and a half ) zones warmer than I am. As of the end of July my strongest plant is about 7 feet tall and has several small fruit. This year has been on the cool side so they have grown slow. These plants like a lot of water to go along with the heat. I do not water everyday but I shoot for 2 good soakings a week. |
