Chinese cabbage Wong Bok

the outer leaves of my Chinese Cabbage/Wong Bok don't wrap tightly as a matter of form - they flop open. It has been suggested that I covered the plant with a tin can so as to hold the leaves together. Surely this is not what commercial growers do. Has any home gardener had success with this vegetable so as to produce them to the standard one sees in the supermarkets? Many thanks for your help.
