Please tell us all just what a Drumstick plant is. Without saying, the botanical nme is the only one of any use.

Well, the one I have heard called that is Moringa oleifera. It's a a tropical tree native to India. The immature seed pods are called "drumsticks" and are used similar to green beans. The older leaves can be used as a cooked green, the very young tender leaves raw in salads or as an herb/flavoring (it tastes like a milder version of cress/peppergrass or nasturtium), and the roots can be used as a horseradish substitute.

I bought a packet of seeds last year. They grew reasonably well, and I overwintered them in my basement dormant by cutting them back and keeping them quite dry. It worked, and they came back quite well. They're about 4 feet tall now. I have found them a bit temperamental about temperatures -- they didn't like cool weather last year, and showed it by drooping after cold nights in the 40's.

I am talking about Moringa oleifera. I use leaves in salad. I bring the plant indoor during winter and put them back out in mid spring, they do well with plenty of leaves. I have them from past 5 years, however never any success with pods. I always felt that short summer (heat) is the reason. However, this season temps were 90+ almost every day, but still no pods. I do have lots of flowers though.

Well, its encouraging that they bloomed. It might be the hotter weather this year, or maybe they just needed to reach a certain age to bloom.

I hope they set fruit for you. I assume they're still outside, so hopefully they'll get pollinated and set some pods. It couldn't hurt to take a tiny artists paintbrush and try to spread some pollen yourself.

denninmi, chaman--luckily we had warm humid temps in NJ last week--just enough for those natural pollinators to work on flowers. Plants are outside. But still not sure if it will set the pods, as temps go down and I need to bring the plants indoor. I have to just wait and watch.
