I'm interested in growing daikon radishes next year- I'd prefer the long, narrow ones rather than the more spherical varieties. My question is, rather than preparing the soil to a 2 foot depth, would it be possible to grow the radishes singly in 3 foot lengths of PVC pipe (maybe 9" diameter?)placed upright against a wall and filled with soil. In other words, a sort of container growing? Problems with soil getting too warm?

I would think as long as their in shade, planted at the right time, enough water, etc and the soil is good soilm organically rich, etc... you should be ok

i'm gonna grow daikon this fall--in bags. i have a japanese magazine that has an article about it. (my mom is japanese) i just need to get some bags and find the magazine. i only know a little japanese, so my mom will have to explain it. ithink growing them in pipes would work, but 9" seems small. it seems harder to maintain soil fertility in such a small space, but it's certainly possible. i think growing in containers is fairly common in japan, b/c i also read an article online on growing sweet potatoes in a bag--i do that too when i don't have the space in the regular bed.
