'Magilla' is only a variety name. These common name for Perilla is Shiso and what I've read it would be just as edible as the common variety. Kewl, another pretty that I can eat!

The perillas are used to flavoring and coloring various pickled vegetables and the red one goes with pickled plums.
I believe all the perillas are edible herbs.

Many years too late for these two, but for anyone else who is reading: this is misinformation. Rather like geranium and pelargonium...perilla and perilla magilla are two different plants. Magilla is an ornamental more closely related to a coleus than a perilla and should not be considered an edible. Even Whole Foods, where I mistakenly bought this in the edibles section, apparently doesn't know.
