Looks like a gall. I've never heard of an azalea japonica however ....

Here is a link that might be useful: Another picture of an azalea gall

Yes: azalea leaf gall. Pick them all and burn or put in sealed plastic bags in trash.

Does your "azalea japonica" have a japonica-shaped bloom? I bought some azaleas at random and surprisingly, one of them produced beautiful snowwhite japonica-type blooms, an entirely different shape than the customary funnel-shaped azalea bloom. The foliage is definitely azalea-type leaves. I never before heard of an azalea japonica. Can anyone shed any light on this?

By japonica-type bloom, I mean camelia-type bloom, not the
azalea japonica that I have learned about since posting the above question. My bloom is very similiar in form to a camelia bloom and is very white.
