Azaleas have yellowed and dropped most leaves

I have only grown azaleas before up East and this is my first experience growing them in Kentucky. What I didn't realize is that my soil is highly alkaline and they like acid soil. I prefer not to fight nature so even though I tried to modify the soil, azaleas might not be right for my property.

I put in 3 azaleas in Spring and 2 did well, the other one had quite a few yellow leaves. Anyway, when Fall came and the temps dropped, the azaleas started to lose all of their lower leaves. Only the new growth at the top remains. When I pulled the tag, it is Pink Ruffles Azalea, and says evergreen foliage. Oh. So will new leaves grow in Spring or are these goners?
