It's very difficult to provide meaningful advice with nothing except the hardiness zone to go on. There is a sizable number of rhododendron varieties which would likely meet your needs. All in all, a trip to a good local nursery is probably your best course. You will see varieties adapted to your particular area. The rest is a matter of personal taste.

The only cautions I'd offer are these: first, if the area around the pool where you propose to plant is subject to a lot of foot traffic, rhododendrons may not be the best choice. Second, if there tends to be even occasional overflow from the pool, water containing chlorine and other chemicals may be seriously damaging.

Planting a rhodie anywhere near a pool isn't a good idea. Especially an inground pool which I take it that is there because you have children.

So easy to break branches by errant play not to mention the presence of, overspill/cannonball spray, new concrete (perhaps as an edging) or rock/ compacted grass) let alone a pool typically being sited in a sunny spot.

What's your purpose in wanting to 'shield' the pool?? If it's from neighbors you have the rest of the yard. If it's to 'cover' the side walls of the pool, I don't have an answer for you this morning.

I just don't think that it's a very good or well thought out idea.

Granted, your query could have been better described as to goals, location, etc. but planting rhodies because you love them (don't we all?) sounds like forcing a plant into the wrong space.
