Rhododendron Leaf Problems

I have a 3-year-old pink flowered Rhododendron
planted in my Kensington, MD garden. It is about
1-2 feet high. It has obvious leaf problems, but
I do not know if this is a pest, disease, or
cultural problem. It is planted in a loamy free-
draining soil. I have used about a cup of cotton-
seed meal to fertilize each spring. Any idea of
what the problem might be? Thank you!

RE: Rhododendron Leaf Problems

The brown spots are most likely the result of fungal infection. Rhododendrons are subject to a great many of these, but most are are more of an aetsthetic problem rather than a threat to the plant's continued health. Using a fungicide, either systemic soil drench or a spray, can halt its spread protect newly emerging leaves.

The unhealthy yellowish color indicates a nutritional problem. The place to begin is a soil test, including the soil's pH.
