Trimming native azaleas

I have many native azaleas on my property in very unusual colors. There is lavender, orange, yellow, peach, salmon, pink and white. They were dug up as rescures and placed in the yard by the former owners. I am in Mobile, Alabama. I know how to trim my regular azaleas, but do not know if these native varieties can be trimmed. They are more of a tree form. They are tall and leggy. I do not want to kill them. If I trim them back will they become more of a bushy form, or should I just let them become "azalea trees"?

Thank you for your knowledge.
