There are literally 1000's of rhododendron varieties, so your best bet would be to visit a good local nursery and see what's available. The 10' height would limit the choices to some degree. There are varieties that grow this tall, but it would take many, many years for those with a moderate growth rate to reach ten feet.

Hi, mainegrower! Thank you for responding to this, since I have a similar question. Are you saying, then, that rhodies are not good for privacy hedges? Are there any rhodies that are known for growing very tall?

Brandy: Some rhododendron varieties will grow tall, but it takes a long time, especially in a colder climate like Z5. Rhododendron size is usually listed as what you can expect after 10 years under good growing conditions. You'll find some varieties listed at 6' after 10 years and, of course, they will keep on growing, but it takes a very patient gardener to use them as a privacy screen. As a hedge, which usually means close planting and lots of pruning, rhododendrons look stiff and unnatural.

The best approach is to use an upright conifer for the privacy shield, and then plant rhododendrons in front to dress it up and give some spring flowers. Then you can also plant some summer blooming perennials around the rhododendrons.
