root rot or something else?

I am new to azalea's, and home gardening in general, though I have read alot about them on these forums, they are great!

I bought this Geralds Fuchsia Azalea for mothers day 2010 and I had to keep it for myself (I bought another for my mom). I planted it next to a fence, it gets morning sun and afternoon shade. On the other side of the fence the neighbors have some very nice rhododendrons, so I assume the soil is acidic enough. I have never fertilized around this guy, but the leaves look purple/brown and some of the stems are bare. my soil is clay-like and I have a high water table. I'm wondering if this is how they should look in early spring, or if it is root rot. Or maybe something else?
