Nurturing Azaleas to bloom indoors

yugoslava

For several years I have been able to keep tender azaleas blooming in the winter indoors. The flowers would last for 4 months. It was lovely to see. They did not look as good as when I purchased them. I know I need to pinch them and fertilize, however, there must be a schedule to follow when it comes to fertilization and pinching, which obviously I don't know. One more thing, when it comes to pinching how deep should I go. Can I pinch into the woody stem or should it be only soft green growth. Thank you for answers.
