Since azalea's bloom on new growth, any pruning should be done after it blooms.
I'd wait until it's done blooming to do anything. If it's getting ready to bloom, it's not too unhappy where it is, but I can see why you'd want to move it.

Sited where it's getting runoff from your roof isn't good...I can't think of much of anything that would be happy there. I have gutters or wouldn't be able to grow anything near the house in this rainy climate...the soil would be too compacted after winter storms to support anything. (and compacted soil can cause decline or leaf drop in azaleas and rhododendrons)

Your azalea set its buds for this years flowers late last summer. The best time to prune is immediately after it flowers, or during if you want to make woody stemmed bouquets. You can move it anytime the ground is not frozen, or it is not in active growth (the period when the leaves are opening right after bloom).....but if you live in a harsh winter climate (unlike my own), it is recommended you follow the same planting time as normally used for adding new plants to your garden.

Growth habit for calendulaceum (flame) is upright, usually vase shaped and wider at the top, somewhat barer near the bottom. If you think your plant is more sparse than it should be, it could be getting too much shade...does it get morning sun in your NE location?

morz8, this azalea looks more like an acacia tree!!It is barren at the bottom but it has a rich "canopy"??

Could be that this is the growth habit for this plant....
it is on the N.E. corner.. but more on the north?
