Rhododendron wound, what to do?

I planted an R. maximum where it got a lot of snow piled on it this winter. It was about 2' high and 4' wide, in a wide "V" shape, with two main branches branching to the left and right a few inches above the soil level. The weight of the snow split the main trunk about 2-3 inches down, but the branch on either side is doing fine apparently. I've just propped the one that is drooping the most up to close the wound and could tie the two branches so the wound is pulled closed, but wonder if that's right or if I should do anything else. Any ideas (aside from protecting the poor thing better next year)?
