Planted 5 of 10 Rhodys Today

First off, I have never planted a rhody but have gotten interested in these bushes recently.

The soil on my lot is heavy clay so I dug down about 6 inches or so, mixed the clay from the hole with peatmoss, topsoil and mushroom compost, filled the hole about half way with the mix and then planted the bush mounding up additional soil around the plant so that it was "up". I covered the mound lightly with woodchips.

These bushes seemed to have fairly shallow root systems so my questions are should I have dug down further than 6 inches and how much of a layer of woodchips should I put on these new bushes - they are roughly 3 ft tall / wide now and I don't want them to dry out.
