azalea advice

I have a 18" azalea hat ended up in the strong sun last summer after my large 60' locust tree which provided shade for it, died.
I decided to transplant it to a shadier spot last month.
It only has leaves on the tips of the branches and very few buds.
When I cut on the branches below the leaves, all the stems are healthy green.
Show I shear the top 8-10" off the bush and hope leaves start to appear below the cutting?
Would you give it some food at this time?
