heavy spring growth

Hello all....new to the forums and azaleas in general.

Quick question. So I planted some "fashion" azaleas this fall in a raised stone bed in my courtyard. Bed is back-filled with really fast draining, pine bark laden soil which i was told is ideal for azaleas. I was instructed by a reliable source to fertilize them lightly with holly-tone around mid march and wait to prune them until they finish blooming. Well these things have exploded with buds and alot of tender green new growth. The new growth is actually so vigorous that its kind of stealing the show from the emerging flowers. Can I trim this lime-green new stuff to show off the flowers or is that going to mess up bud development for next year?

Any input would be greatly appreciated
