Gangly azaleas

Got two of these for $2 each at a close-out last year. Didn't really expect them to last the winter, but they are blooming. I assume that when they're done, I should prune back the tall stuff, but should I go further than that? How much should they be cut back to try to make a nicely-formed shrub?

As soon as they finish blooming you can cut them back. I am assuming that you don't want to cut back further than the area where the flowers are. You can cut off the top growth at any point where you want the top of the plant to be. But do it soon after the bloom since they form the new flower buds in mid summer. If you wait too long to prune you will be cutting next years flower buds off.
