Out of control!

I have a huge azalea bush that was planted as a foundation bush in front of our windows. Actually, based on flower color, I am thinking it may be several Azalea's that have grown in together. I need to trim them back, and have read that the best time is after they flower. Here is my question (silly as it may be): Does that mean right as they begin to flower or after the flowers begin to die off? Also - how far back can I trim?

Here is a link that might be useful: Azalea's
