Purple Formosa, leaf gets smaller. Help!

rosegone

I planted a roll of 4 purple Formosa (http://www.clearzonenursery.com/plants/Shrubbery/pages/image19.html)on my north side of house 3 yrs ago. It has big dark green leafs like the picture in the link. It did come back blooming last year, but the leafs seems gets smaller each year. One of the plant only left with 3 puny leafs at the bottom, the rest of leafs were gone in that plant. I broke off the branches, and it just look brown and woody; no sign of green or white. The other three still alive, but the size of the leaf is less than 1/4 of the size compare to the original plant.

My questions are: should I replace that plant? What happened to my azalea? Is it nutrient deprive, under drought stress or even too much water? What I have in my yard are clay soil. So when it rains too much, they can be under tubs of water; at the same time, it can be too dry in the dry Texas summer.

Thank you for your help!
