Pruning a Rhodie

First of all when we bought our house 4 years ago there were flowers and shrubs everywhere (which is one reason why we bought it) but all were in bad shape due to location mainly. Azaleas and Rhodies were all in full sun, Daylillies in full shade, roses in half shade, etc. I have finally moved the last Rhodie to it's new location about 2 weeks ago and is putting out some new growth. The place it was planted before I moved it, was in full sun with daylilies planted all around the base to the point where when I dug it up I seen that there was no foilage on the bottom half except for an occasional shoot coming out of nowhere. The Daylilies were smothering it obviously. I did a little pruning but it still looks bad. Will foilage ever grow back on the bottom half or will I need to do a severe pruning to renew it?
