Hard-pruning Rhododendrons in Late May/Early June

Here's my question. I am new to this forum by the way, and super excited to be here. anyway.

I have a particular rhody (unsure of the cultivar) that grows on a east-facing fence. there is a side of it that is becoming quite leggy, and i want the sucker to be bushy...its bushy and leafy on the side that gets lots of sun, the side that is not pushed against the fence. i'm worried about transplanting, plus i dont really have room for it anywhere else...if i were to hard prune the heck out of it, and feed a high nitrogen fertilizer (i fed a light organic rhody fert in early march this year), would i see better growth as opposed to simply hard pruning it? i have hard pruned rhody's before down to nothing and next year i see suckers and green growth so they MUST be resilient...any advice here would be most welcome!

many thanks
