Pruning of leggy maxis to get them to bush...

I have a couple of maxis which are in a shady spot. They have become very leggy; each year just one shoot results per stem even when I de-bud them to try to get them to get bushy. I want to try to cut them back to get them to bush. The buds are just beginning to shoot now, is this the best time to prune them back in order to achieve my objective?

Now is a good time. You might give it a shot of Hollytone at half the rate on the package also. If you can reduce the amount of shade by cutting the lower limbs off nearby trees, that would help also. Don't be too conservative when cutting the top branches back. That will force the lower ones to fill out some.
