Dwarf red azalea--will it recover?

Hello. I have a lovely dwarf red that has been nearly choked out (it's only about a foot wide) by a rhododendron on either side. It is blooming. I've cleared back the rhodies (I'd rather have the azalea). Should I prune away the underbrush that is mostly dead but has some leaves and blooms at the ends? Will the azalea eventually fill the empty space? How long will it take? Or should I plant another in that space? Thanks!
